Characters and their colours

I confess, I am not the best at backgrounds and landscapes (and I don’t really enjoy that). I first planned to have this comic in black and white – then thought that solid colour could bring a valuable support to the story. From there, I decided to attribute a special colour to each of my main and secondary characters, which would correspond to their personalities and roles in the story.

Shura is weak, but he is also the Fallen Man, the Son of the Sun – his colour is a bright yellow.
Akane is a fiery and passionate woman, who loves the action and the present – her colour is as red as her albinos’ eyes.
Chanda is loyal, trustworthy, attached to the traditional way – his colour is a vibrant, natural green.
The Seer is a mystical person, mysterious and magical – her colour is a rich purple.
The Storyteller is wise, calm, a person of guidance – She will be bearing a rather light blue.
Eiji is a weak yet ambitious man who betrayed his cousin – His colour is mustard, close enough to Shura’s, yet tainted.

These are the first examples but a few other characters of importance (like the clans’ leaders) will probably be added to this list. If my progress in the scenario keeps steady, I will be able to show you a more concrete example very soon!

‘The Seer’ Yindi (Chika) #1 – first design

People often refer to her as ‘the Seer’, also because most of them don’t know that she has a name. There can be only one Seer at a time, and only the current Seer can pick out the next one. Chika is around 13-14 years old, Seer for about 7 years already. Half-blind, she wears her hair long with a fringe that falls on her eyes. She has no eyebrows, which gives her a sort of eerie air. Rather small, she wears a long and wide, formless white dress.

Her visions – coming with weird kind of fits – are taken very seriously by Underlanders and she has messengers from all tribes by her side.

I didn’t really have any other character in mind when creating her, or maybe I wasn’t aware of it!

Cohyn (Eiji) #1 – first design

Eiji is Shura’s cousin – the Governor and his dad are brothers. In his late twenties, he is very intelligent, also ambitious and disappointed not to be in Shura’s shoes. He craves to take power over the Tower, convinced that his ideas would be for the greater good, leading him to plot against his cousin.

Pretty small, he is quite boring looking and not very attractive, although he couldn’t care less. He wears glasses and short brown hair. He dresses very formally.

You wouldn’t think at first that he is a bad guy – he actually is rather sweet and polite, very calm and friendly. He listens more than he talks and is very patient.

I had diverse influences leading to the creation of this character, the main one being Yukio from Blue Exorcist.

‘The Fallen Man’ Isaiah (Shura) #1 – first design

Shura is the son of the Governor of the Eastern tower, legally Governor to be. He’s 20 years old, of average size, not very muscular, with an average boring face. Intelligent and a quick learner, he is also quite empathic, an essential quality for a future ruler. He certainly isn’t fit for the dangers of the Underland though: he doesn’t have any fighting skill and doesn’t know anything about this world, so different to what is used to be according to the books he read.

Shura doesn’t know if he is the legendary Savior, the Fallen Man that everyone is arguing about, all he knows is that he doesn’t want to stay trapped in the Underland forever and will use all the means he can to go back to the tower.

While deciding to make him boring looking, I had Roy Mustang from full metal alchemist in mind – average man/great power combo.

The tribes&The Untouchables – overview

After most of the population was left to suffocate on the ground, the order of all things changed greatly: death and diseases killed about 90% of the human race, life was about survival, technologies were switched off forever and everything started mutating very, very quickly. More than 200 years after the Masterplan, here’s an overview of the most important tribes, clans and gangs of what’s left of Asia:

Koa (Chanda) #1 – first design

Another of my three main characters and another messenger for his own clan of fighters: Chanda. He wouldn’t let the Fallen Man end onto the hands of the Amazons. In his early twenties, he is a strong and healthy man, fierce and proud, although a bit stupid at times and taking stereotypes for granted. The least we can say is that he’s going to learn a lot about the world during this adventure!

Alinta (Akane) #1 – first design

One of my main characters, one I knew I was going to use, and how: Akane. She’s one of the messenger of the Amazons, therefore supposedly Untouchable, but she is easily bored and prefers trouble over duty. She is an Albinos girl of about 17-18 years old – not that Underlanders have such notions as ‘years’ anymore though – and doesn’t care much about her fierce tribe’s values if she can have fun instead. Very expressive, she lives her emotions very intensely. She is one of the main companions of the Fallen Man.

Hi! :)

underlandtitleheader

As a creative, I like to touch to a lot of different fields. Drawing and painting are my first activity, but I also write a lot and enjoy any medium that can be used for storytelling, from movies to video games. A big fan of comics and bandes-dessinées, I matured the story of Underland for years and now seemed to be the right time to actually make that happen. This is my very first try and will probably be filled with flaws- all I know is that I am already enjoying it, and I hope that you will too.

This blog will be used as an overview of my creative process, and I’d love it to become participative and have my followers giving their opinion, on the story as well as the design, so feel free to leave any kind of comment! I’ll also use this platform to inform you of any news regarding the publishing of Underland, and you’ll also have the privilege to discover a lot of content before anybody else.

Thanks for your support!
